Nowadays there are a lot of different brands of haircolouring products available out there. In addition to these you could also have your hair dyed by a proffesional hair stylist. I have had the opportunity to try the new Precision Foam Colour by John Frieda. Below I will give a review of my findings.
In short
advantages
- It comes with everything you need included
- Colours up to 2 shades lighter and infinitely darker
- Very easy to use, it doesn't spill: you don't need any help
- colour stays beautiful for a long time
disadvantages
- quite expensive
- the conditioner is not sold separately
- the smell is very unpleasant, but only during handling
my impressions
Let me begin by saying that I tried to dye my hair about seven years ago. After fidling with the liquid and my hair for over an hour and another half hour rinsing and trying to get it of my face, it turned out that after drying my hair colour was exactly the same. I decided then and there that I would never again dye my hair, as it was a total waste of money. My hairstylist actually told me later that you can't dye red hair. When I had a free sample of Precision Foam Colour sent to me, I decided to give it one last try.
Because I did not want to tell anyone, in case it would go wrong again, I waited till I was home alone. I read the manual and got started. The package consists of a bottle of dye, a 'foamer'bottle with colour developer, a conditioner and a pair of professional gloves. The first step is mixing the dye and developer. After carefull mixing it is ready for use. It's advised to wear a towel over your shoulders, and be certain to use the gloves. These will fit most womens hands quite well.
My natural hair colour is a light shade of red and I wanted to get a darker red-brown. So I used the 5R colour. By simply squeezing the middle part of the bottle you can put some foam on your hand. The only thing you''ll have to do now is put it in your hair. You repeat this till all of your hair is covered with mousse. After this you spread the mousse in your hair like you would a shampoo. Meanwhile keep adding mousse until you bottle is empty. Strange but true; the mousse does not run from your hair and can be washed real easy from the towel. Even the mousse that eventually gets on your skin you can easily wash away. Meanwhile you'll notice that the colour coming from the bottle will graduatly become darker. Don't let this bother you, it will not affect the final result. The mousse should be allowed to soak for at least 10 minutes up to a maximum of 30 minutes. After that you simply rinse your hair in the shower till the water that comes off is colourless, then use the conditioner like you would any normal conditioner. The result is evenly coloured, glossy hair.
The review
Maybe you already unstood from my colourful description that I really like this product. I have never before dyed my hair in such an easy fashion. Even without someone there to help you you can colour your hair without missing a spot. Precision Foam Colour advertises its easy way to get evenly coloured hair and it is one of the few products out there that actually deliver on this promise. The colour on the packaging represents the actual colour quite well and the colour stays in your hair for a long period of time. Three weeks have passed since I dyed my hair and the colour is still exactly the same and glossy. The included conditioner makes your hair really soft, so I most certainly did not feel like I had damaged my hair afterwards. The tube of conditioner is however fairly small and you can't get it seperately. A colourconditioner by john frieda is recommended, but for red hair these are no longer available, which is a shame.
During the colouring you will smell a sharp chemical odour. So it's probably smart to open any doors or windows of the room you are using. The manual does not mention proper ventilation, but if you don't do this you will probably get a solid headache later on ( like I did). The product is also a bit more expensive then other hair colouring products, but for this you get a quallity equal to a hair colouring at a hairstylist which is a lot more expensive.
All things considered I think this is a great product. It is easy to use, gives a nice looking result and it's still cheaper than other methodes that yield the same result. On a scale from 1-10 this couloring product gets a 8.5 in my book.
